Statement

"Tagebau" (German for open-pit mining) is a project exploring brown coal (or lignite) extraction in Germany.

I'm mainly interested in its environmental and social impact: Older mining areas have become huge holes in the landscape, often transformed in vast lakes, thus changing the nature of a region, while newer ones are still expanding and have sometimes to replace whole inhabited areas.

Brown coal is at the same time one of the most polluting form of energy and one of the most widely available: in a time of growing energy needs and foreign dependency, in societies more aware every day of global warming, its use questions our relationship to the environment.
