Statement"State of Transition" is a series in which I explore the deep changes affecting Central Europe after the fall of communism in 1989: the transition from crumbling dictatorships to a model of society similar to western Europe. As a so-called "westerner" living now in a city formerly "from the east", I want to see how a new set of values is applied to countries who were kept apart for 40 years. I'm interested in confronting cold-war icons (Soviet kitsch, gray cities, socialist realist architecture, ...) with today's reality: a contrasted mix of old and new, numerous construction sites, modern city centers and yet to be renovated suburbs, attempts to be more “West” than the West itself, distinctive choices on how to plan urban life, etc. I'm also curious to see how reconstruction there mirrors what was done in the west before, and through that mirror what it tells about the west in general.
